Chapter 13: Yes to the Plaque
I read the invitation twice standing in Hayes's kitchen corner, with my hair still wet.
The gold letters were heavy enough to feel under my thumb.
"You don't have to go," Hayes said.
"I know."
"She wants you in a ballroom in a dress, holding a plaque that says volunteer."
"I know what she wants."
"Then why go?"
I turned the card over.
On the back was a reply slip with two little boxes.
Will attend.
Regrets.
"Because I told her I'd take my money with her own pen, in front of people who know her name," I said.
"And that dinner is the only room where all of them will be sitting down."
Hayes was quiet.
I took his carpenter's pencil from the windowsill and checked the first box.
Under it, on the blank line, I wrote:
I'll be there, dear.
He read it over my shoulder and let out a short breath that was almost a laugh.
"She'll hear that in your voice."
"Good."
The shop bell rang downstairs before he could answer.
It rang again, then three times fast, the way someone rings who has already decided to come in.
