Chapter 18: Table Twelve

The ballroom had a ceiling painted with clouds and four chandeliers that threw light on three hundred people in good clothes.

A banner hung over the stage in gold thread.

AMES FAMILY FOUNDATION: CHAMPION OF FAMILY CAREGIVERS.

Under it stood a podium, a string quartet, and a framed portrait of Adele in her pearls, smiling the way she smiled at the bank.

I stood in the doorway in my friend's green dress and felt every head turn.

It wasn't the dress.

Half the room had been at her club on Thursday.

"That's the girl," a woman whispered near me.

"The one who knew all the medicines."

"Is she staff?"

"Honored guest, I heard."

"Is she?"

My friend squeezed my elbow.

She had walked in with me, in a black dress and her good coat, and she was holding a small beaded bag.

"Smile like you own the building," she said.

"I don't."

"Yet," she said.

A young man in a bow tie checked my name against a list and ran his finger down it twice.

"Table twelve," he said.

"It's at the back."

"By the service doors."

"I know," I said.

The tables nearest the stage had white orchids and name cards in silver ink.
