Chapter 16: The Third No
Mason's POV
All of Sunday I turned over what Jo had told me Kayla whispered at the bakery door.
Lund had ordered the theft, and Lund had started with the savings.
I had the trust ledger, and Kayla's word through Jo, and Jo had said she would decide what to do with both.
On Monday morning I watched from the mezzanine as Troy Ames came through my revolving door.
He had not shaved.
He walked past the front desk without checking in, straight to the pastry case where Jo was setting out the morning croissants, and he went down on one knee on my marble floor.
Guests turned.
A bellman stopped with a luggage cart.
"Jo," Troy said, loud enough for the lobby. "Please. I'm begging you."
I was already on the stairs.
I had my hand on the rail, and I had taken three steps down when I remembered what I'd promised her.
You don't speak for me.
You don't fix it.
I stopped on the fourth step, with the whole lobby between us, and I stood there with my hands open at my sides.
It was the hardest thing I had done in a year.
"The bank is calling the whole sixty thousand," Troy said. "In my name too. I'm on the application, Jo, I'm a co-borrower. I'll lose my car. I'll lose everything. Kayla won't even talk to me."
Jo put down her tongs.
"I didn't sign it," she said.
"I know. I know you didn't. But you could say you did. One sentence. You could say you knew, and the bank would drop it."
