Chapter 22: On Purpose
Jo's POV
By the third Sunday, Mason could roll out a sheet of dough without tearing it.
He was still terrible at crimping an edge, and he knew it.
I stood behind him at the steel table in the Wing kitchen that afternoon, with my hands over his, and showed him how to press with the sides of his thumbs.
The kitchen was clean now.
The range had been rebuilt, the windows washed, and a row of small aprons hung by the door for the older kids who came on Saturdays.
Mrs. Lund's replacement, a retired schoolteacher the board had voted in unanimously, had signed the lease for the room herself.
I had paid every contractor on time, out of the trust, and Mason had sent me no flowers and no checks.
He had only come on Sundays.
"Press," I said into his shoulder.
"I am pressing."
"You're strangling it."
"It deserves it."
I laughed, and he turned his head, and his mouth was right there.
He smelled like flour and warm butter.
The children had gone to the dining hall an hour before.
There was nobody in the Wing but us, and the sun was low in the tall windows.
"Mason."
"Yes."
"I'm taking advantage again."
His hands went still under mine.
"On purpose?"
"On purpose. The door locks. I want you on the table."
He turned around.
His eyes had gone dark, and he looked at me for a long moment.
"Tell me what you want."
"I want you to take your shirt off. I want you flat on your back on that steel. And I want you to let me do everything."
