Chapter 13: Sabine's Key

Elias was off the cot and into his jeans before Sabine finished the sentence.

I pulled the blanket over my chest and did not look away from her.

"You went in," she said again, softly, and wiped her cheek with the back of her wrist. "Oh, Bryn. I wanted to spare you that."

"You knew what was in there."

"I knew something was wrong with it."

She stepped into the cell and shut the iron door behind her, and the lock clicked.

"I swear to you I did not know what it was until this morning," she said. "I came down because June's bed was empty, and the oak door was locked from the outside with a key your father says doesn't exist."

She was crying properly now, and her hands were shaking.

For twenty years she had been the only person in the pack house who ever spoke gently to me.

I wanted to believe every word.

"Why are you telling me this?" I said.

"Because Declan wakes at seven," Sabine said. "When he hears you opened it, he will not hurt you, Bryn. He cannot. The stone needs you alive."

She looked at Elias.

"He will hurt him."

Elias had read her mouth, and his jaw went hard.

"What do you want?" I said.

"I want you gone tonight."

She pulled a folded paper out of her cardigan pocket and held it out to me.

"The cook will say she saw nothing. June will say you picked the lock. The stone on the north road is the one that hurt you, and I can get you past it."

"How?"

"There's a way to quiet it for an hour. Your father taught me years ago, when he thought I'd never use it."

I looked at the paper.

It was a hand-drawn map of the north road, with a cross at the border.
