Chapter 24: The Challenge

Sabine stood in the road in front of the border stone with eighty wolves at her back.

They wore grey cloaks and carried no weapons, and they did not look at me.

"This is the old mill pack," Sabine said, in the warm carrying voice I had trusted for twenty years. "My mother's people. They have waited a long time for me to call them."

"You cut my border," I said.

"I freed it."

She turned to Redcedar, standing in a ragged line along the road behind me.

"My dear ones. You are sick. Your cubs are dying. Your Alpha is in a cell and his daughter is a girl who has been in that room, and who has let the stone starve for a quarter of a century."

A low growl ran along the line.

"I am the Luna of this pack," Sabine said, "and I have come to feed you."

"With what?" June said.

She had come up beside me, white and shaking, in her father's flannel shirt.

"With the lie that you put in the cook's mouth?" June said. "Mama, I read your notebook."

Sabine's smile did not move.

"You are nineteen, June. You don't understand."

"I understand what you wrote about me."

Her voice cracked, and she held out the black notebook so the nearest hunters could see.

"'The girl is soft, she will do what I tell her,'" June read aloud. "I was the girl."

Sabine's eyes flickered.
