Chapter 19: Easter

"I'll sit wherever you tell me," Nate said in the car. "Front, back, outside."

"Next to me."

On Easter morning Lulu stood in my doorway in a green bunny dress, holding a plastic egg.

"This is for church," she said.

"You're not coming to church, bug. You've got the egg hunt with the housekeeper."

"I know. It's for you." She pushed it into my hand. "It's a courage egg. There's a jelly bean in it. A red one."

"They're the bravest flavor," she said. "Don't eat it till you need it."

I put it in my coat pocket next to Potato.

My mother's church had white lilies on every windowsill and a brass band in the balcony.

It was full to the walls.

Women in spring hats. Men in ties they wore twice a year.

I'd sung in the Christmas pageant there in a sheet with a coat hanger halo.

Dot came in behind us in a purple blouse and her reading glasses on their chain.

"I haven't been in one of these since my wedding," she muttered. "If the roof comes down, it's your fault."

We sat on the aisle, ten rows back.
