Chapter 22: Thursday Clinic

Ronan's POV

I found Bree in the fourth-floor nurses' station at six forty on Saturday morning, eating cereal out of a mug.

"Dr. Maddox," she said, without looking up. "You look like a man who's about to ask for something."

"I am."

"Is it a bed? Because we're full."

"It's a blessing."

She put down the spoon.

She was five foot four, and she made me feel like the one standing in front of a desk.

"Go on," she said.

"I want to ask Claire to marry me."

Bree didn't move for a full breath.

"She's been divorced for seven days."

"Her petition isn't final. I know that."

"She lives in a one-bedroom with a mattress on the floor."

"I know that too."

"Do you know why she's glad about the mattress?"

"Because it's hers."

"Because it's the first thing anyone has bought for her without a reason attached," Bree said. "Don't you dare attach a reason."

I stood very still.

"I won't ask her to move," I said. "I won't ask her to quit. I won't ask her to change a single thing about how she lives."

"What will you ask her?"

"Whether she'd like me to be there for it."

Bree looked at me for a long time.

Then she took a cereal flake off her lip and flicked it into the bin.

"If you hurt her," she said, "I know where we keep the sedatives. I know which vein."

"I'd expect nothing less."

"And I'll cry at the wedding. I'm telling you now so you're prepared."

"Is that a yes?"

"It's a yes, Ronan," she said, and for the first time she called me by my name and didn't make it sound like an insult. "Go away. I have a woman in bed nine who hates me."
