Chapter 11: The Bath
Kanae did not speak to Vorhaan for the rest of that day.
She did not shout at him either.
She walked out of the command tent and went to find the wounded.
It was the only thing she knew how to do with her anger.
There were forty-three of them.
The Kingdom had thrown the Dawnblade's light at the Legion's pickets all week.
Every man it touched carried a small black ember of the Brand.
They lay in rows in the old stable of the watchtower, on straw, with Ishkra's clerks passing among them with water.
Kanae knelt by the first one.
A boy, barely grown, his forearm blistered black.
She put her hands over it and the light came up, and the ember died.
She moved to the next.
And the next.
It was slow work, and she was surprised by how little it hurt.
At the tenth, her hands began to tremble.
At the twentieth, Ishkra put a stool under her without a word.
At the thirtieth, the stable swam, and her own breath sounded far away.
"Lady," one of the soldiers said hoarsely, from his straw. "Lady, you should rest."
"Nearly done."
"You're white as milk."
"Eleven more."
She did the eleven.
When the last ember went out, the whole stable was full of soft gold light, and forty-three demons had stopped groaning and begun to stare.
She tried to stand.
Her knees folded.
A pair of enormous arms caught her before she hit the straw.
"Enough," Vorhaan said into her hair.
She hadn't heard him come in.
She wanted to hit him, and she wanted to put her face into his neck, and she didn't have the strength to do either.
"I'm angry with you," she mumbled.
"I know."
