Chapter 14: Thanksgiving Heat

The hot room door shut behind us, and the heat hit my face.

It was a brick room at the back of the Pit, built around the flues, with a cedar bench on two walls.

Finished briskets rested there overnight at a temperature no person was built for.

An hour ago we had stood in the Plaza crowd under a million lights while the whole city counted down.

Now I had Ronan by the collar and my back against the sweating brick.

The only light was the red glow at the firebox seam.

"You left the Plaza for this," he said.

"I left it for you," I said.

"There were fireworks."

"There's one here."

I pulled his mouth down to mine.

He kissed me slowly, with the whole holiday night to spend, and his hands stayed at his sides.

Sweat was already running down my spine.

I pulled my sweater over my head and dropped it on the bench, and the heat closed around my bare skin.

He looked at me in the red light.

I unhooked my bra and let it fall.

"Start it," I said.

His eyes came up from my breasts to my face.

"You start it," he said.

"I've started it every night for five weeks," I said.

"I know."

"Tonight I want to be taken."

He did not move.

"Say it so I hear it," he said.

"Take me, Ronan."

That did it.

He moved so fast that the breath left me.

His hands closed on my waist and lifted me onto the end of the bench, and his mouth came down on my throat.

He kissed the salt out of the hollow of it.

He licked a long wet line up the side of my neck to my ear, and I shuddered all through.

"You taste of salt and smoke and the whole day," he said.

"Do it again."

He licked me again, slower.

His hands slid up my ribs, slick with sweat, and cupped my breasts.

He rolled my nipples under his thumbs until I pushed my chest into his palms.

"More."

He bent his head and took one in his mouth, hot and wet and rough with beard.

I put both hands in his hair.

I heard myself make a high helpless sound, and the heat took it and threw it back at me.

"Stand up," he said against my skin.
