Chapter 13: The Term
"I don't know what you mean," I said.
"Three little black beads, dear. About the size of a grain of rice."
She said it so gently that the troopers looked at me with pity.
"They were on the tray beside Stellan's bed the night you woke up. They are mine, and I'd like them back."
Bastian had them last.
I had no idea if he still did.
"I don't have them," I said.
"Then we'll look."
She nodded to two of the white coats, and they went off toward the medical bay with a trooper behind them.
Nobody in the line moved.
Kit stared at the sky with great interest.
The white coats came back inside a few minutes, empty-handed.
"The tray is clean, Warden."
"How very careless of somebody," she said, and turned her kind face to Rafe.
"Rafe, dear. In this yard, in front of everyone, you set a term. I have the recording."
He lifted his head slowly.
"If she cut one of you again," the Warden said, "she goes out the airlock with no mask. That was your promise. Stellan has three fresh seams down his spine, and I felt the first one with my own thumb."
"Yes, Warden," Rafe said, in a dead voice.
"A term is a term. Carry it out, and I will forget about the beads."
He took my arm.
His grip was very hard.
The troopers fell in around us, and we walked.
Kit passed close on my left, with his shoulder against mine, and something thin and cold slid into my palm.
I closed my fingers on it.
It was a steel pick, the length of a pencil, with a flat hooked tip.
"For the record," Kit breathed, and fell back.
The airlock was at the end of the east corridor, a round steel door with a glass port.
Rafe walked me into the chamber.
The inner door sealed behind us with a thump, and the two troopers stood outside the glass, with their rods grounded.
