Chapter 10: Eighty Hours
I woke up in a strange bed under a slanted ceiling, with a wet cloth on my forehead and a window full of pine trees.
My mouth tasted like pennies.
A quilt covered me, and someone had taken off my shoes.
"Hi," said Dani from the chair by the bed.
She had on a bathrobe that wasn't hers and the nursing hoodie over it, and a tower of empty soup bowls stood on the nightstand.
"How long?" I said.
"Eighty hours," she said. "Give or take. I kept count, I'm a professional."
"Where am I?"
"His house. Up the hill from campus. Don't worry, it's very manly and has no spices." She leaned forward, and her voice wobbled. "You turned a really scary color, Sierra. Your back was doing something. I don't know what it was doing. He picked you up and carried you out of there like you weighed nothing and told me to get in the truck."
"And you got in."
"I'm nursing," said Dani. "It was an emergency."
"Is Blake here?"
"Your brother's on the porch. He's been on the porch for three days, and he won't come in, and I've fed him twice."
I closed my eyes.
When I opened them again the light was gold and Rhys stood in the doorway.
He hadn't slept in three days.
He had a shadow of beard on his jaw, the same grey shirt, and a thin red mark on his forearm where, Dani said later, I had gripped him so hard in the dark that I'd broken skin.
"I'll go check on the porch," she said, and slipped out.
He didn't come in.
"This was my sister's room," he said.
I looked at the ceiling.
