Chapter 14: The Spoon

The hair from my own brush came back from the clinic on Friday, and the technician asked me to sit down.

He read the number twice before he said it.

Thallium.

A high dose, laid down in the strand over months.

"Whoever did this wanted it slow," he said. "It looks like a bad flu, then trouble with your stomach, then your hair, then your balance. At the end, a fall."

I had taken that brush from a box the first night. I had almost left it behind.

I carried the printout to the car and put it in Leander's hand.

He read it. His face went very still.

"I have to tell you something," he said. "I should have said it two days ago."

He opened his laptop on the dashboard and ran the kitchen tape.

I watched Helen put a cup in front of a girl who was about to die.

I watched her take a spoon from her own cardigan pocket and stir.

I watched the spoon go back into her pocket.

"I held it," he said, "because the tape alone is only a spoon. I wasn't going to hand you a guess."

"You're handing me the truth now."

"I have the number now."

I closed the laptop.

My hands were steady.

That was the worst part.

"The nurse's notebook," I said.
