Chapter 19: The Man Who Dug

Jerome walked the length of the ballroom and stopped at the foot of the stage.

Four hundred people watched him do it.

"Did you give the doorman your name?" I said, quietly, down to him.

"Twice," Jerome said. "In full."

It was the first time all night my chest had loosened.

Then I held out the microphone to the man in the muddy coat.

He didn't want to take it.

"Say it for them," I said. "Start with who you are."

He took the microphone in his thick hand and gave his full name, plain, to the glass ceiling.

"I run a landscaping crew out of Grove City," he said. "I've worked with Miss Sayer's company for two years. Odile Werner's people send us the jobs she doesn't want in the paperwork."

"Another stranger with a story," Odile said, with an amused little lift of her brows.

"Mrs. Werner," the foreman said, without looking at her. "You were on speaker."

The room went still.

"Monday night. Eleven-forty. I had three men and a mini excavator in the van, and you said it over the phone to my crew, so everybody heard. You said, no hurry, there's no one to hear it."

He swallowed.

"We went in at the east gate. The caretaker had been taken care of. We had the lid up in under an hour."

Somewhere in the dark of the ballroom, a woman began to cry.

"There was a man in a gray suit in that box," the foreman said. His voice thickened. "I've dug holes for twenty years. I had never opened a grave. I put the watch in a clean bag and gave it to Mrs. Werner's driver at ten past four, at the gate, and I said I was sorry, and he laughed."
