Chapter 19: The Lease
Trevor laughed, a short ugly bark, and the investors flinched.
"Candice, we're not doing this here."
"We're doing it here." She reached up and unclasped the thin gold chain at her neck.
The little key slid into her palm.
She turned it over, and the engraved L caught the light, and she set it down on the bare sawhorse where the bar top had been.
"That's Lainey's," she said. "I should have given it back in August."
"You're upset."
"I'm done." She pulled a folded paper from the back of her phone case. "I wrote this on Sunday. It's a request to the landlord to release me from the lease. It needs one more signature, and it's yours."
"I'm not signing that."
"Then they'll hear why."
The investor's husband raised a hand.
"Ms. Kirby, a moment. If you put that in writing today, and Mr. Hanley's signature follows, we'll hold the wire until your counsel and ours speak."
"There's no counsel," Trevor said.
"Then there's no wire."
Trevor looked around the room.
Two bartenders watched him with their arms folded.
