Chapter 21: The Night Before
Cade opened his email in the truck, at the curb outside Trevor's mother's house, and it was empty.
Inbox, sent, trash, all of it.
"Eleven years," he said. "I've had that password for eleven years, and I never changed it because he was my friend."
"We don't need the tape."
"We don't?"
"Candice has paper. His mother has a bank. And I have a mouth." I took his hand. "Trevor thinks the tape was all I had."
He looked at me for a long time.
Then he started the truck.
Jo was on shift that night, and her rowhouse was dark except for the lamp in the front window.
We stood in the kitchen where he had once bled on the linoleum, and neither of us turned on a light.
"Tomorrow," he said. "Candice unlocks the back at eight-forty. I'll come through the kitchen. His mother sits in the front. You wait until the toast."
"And then I stand up."
"And then you stand up."
