Chapter 11: Mrs. Lucchesi
The priest said "husband and wife," and Carmine did not wait for the rest.
He kissed me in front of the empty front pews of St. Jerome's.
Teo blew his nose into a handkerchief, and the old priest pretended to look for a missal.
Gold light from the high windows fell across the white lace of my sleeves.
Then it was ten past eleven, and the car was moving, and his hand was already in my hair.
By noon we were home with the door closed and no one allowed past the gate.
The wedding supper at Casa Lucchesi was set for six.
We had until then.
Carmine carried me up the stairs in the white dress, which I had not agreed to.
I did not complain.
He set me on my feet at the foot of the big bed.
He stood in front of me with his hands at his sides.
"Mrs. Lucchesi," he said.
It was a ridiculous, wonderful thing to hear.
"Say it again."
"Mrs. Lucchesi."
"I want the ring on first," I said.
He frowned.
"You have the ring."
"Not mine."
I turned him by the shoulder and pulled the long gold chain over his head.
It slid free of his collar, and Gina's plain wedding band swung from it in my fingers.
His face changed.
I did not take it off him.
I only kissed it, once, and set it gently on the nightstand next to the face-down frame.
"She stays in the room," I said. "She doesn't have to stay on you. Not on our wedding day."
Carmine stood very still.
Then he picked up my left hand and slid a ring onto it.
