Chapter 14: Lockhart
I folded the check back up.
"I'll think about it," I said.
Sherrie smiled.
Wick was in the doorway of the walk-in with a hotel pan in his hands.
He'd heard every word.
He didn't say one of them.
Lockhart, Texas, in the last week of June was a hundred and four degrees in the shade, and there wasn't any shade.
The contest was in a pasture outside town, two hundred rigs in rows, and the grass had burned to straw.
The Kimbrough trailer was three rows over this time.
Saturday morning, two hours before turn-in, Sherrie walked past us with her crew.
She stopped at our tent.
The camera was already rolling.
"Neva," she said brightly. "Did you think about my offer?"
The whole Kimbrough crew had followed her over, with Brice at the back in a cowboy hat that still had the store crease in it.
"I thought about it," I said.
"And?"
I wiped my hands on my apron.
I took the check out of my back pocket, where it had been for three weeks.
"I thought about it every time I got gas," I said. "A hundred thousand dollars is a lot of gas."
"So that's a yes," Sherrie said.
"It's a no." I held the check out to her. "You want me to hug Brice on TV and say sorry. Sorry for what? For cooking his brisket? For walking off when he proposed to you with my trophy?"
Sherrie's smile stayed on.
Her eyes went sharp.
"It's a story, Neva. Everybody wants the family to heal."
"Then let the family heal. I'm not in it." I put the check in her hand and folded her fingers over it. "Tell Hal if he wants me on his show, he can buy a ticket to the awards like everyone else."
Brice pushed the cowboy hat back on his head.
