Chapter 29: Last Night of the Lease
"Home where?" I said. "We've got six days left on the lot."
"Wherever Mabel's parked," Wick said. "Wherever you are. Both, if I'm lucky."
"That's not an address."
"It's the only one I've got."
Three thousand people were holding their breath.
Somewhere down in the crowd, Brice was watching.
Somewhere a network was cutting to a wide shot of a man and his nephew's ex holding hands on a stage.
I didn't care who was watching.
"Yes," I said.
I took his face in both hands and kissed him.
In front of all of them.
He made a low sound against my mouth and pulled me in by the waist, and the crowd went up.
I kissed him until Lorrie started banging on the silver bowl.
"We're live!" she yelled. "Children are watching!"
"It's a barbecue contest," Sherrie said into her headset. "Keep rolling."
The last week went fast.
Monday the lawyers called about Hal.
Tuesday the network called about Sherrie's finale, which had done eleven million.
Wednesday we looked at three lots for Mabel.
All three were wrong.
Thursday the regulars came for the last Thursday service.
The judge ate his lean slice and his moist slice and wrote on his napkin for a long time.
When he left, he put the napkin under the register.
It said 10. 10. 10. THE BEST I EVER HAD. DON'T TELL MY WIFE.
I pinned it to the wall over the counter.
Friday was the thirtieth.
The last night of the lease.
The rooms upstairs were in boxes.
The counter stools were wrapped in moving blankets.
The chalkboard still said HER TRIM WON. W., because nobody would wipe it.
At ten that night, I lit Mabel one last time on that lot.
No meat.
Just a fire, for her, in the place where she'd lived for eleven years.
