Chapter 32: Turn-In
I didn't call his name.
I pulled on my jeans and his canvas jacket from the hook and went down the stairs in my socks.
The kitchen was dark.
The dog wasn't by the counter.
The back door was open an inch, and cold was coming through it.
So was smoke.
I pushed the door open.
The yard was white, and the snow had stopped.
Mabel was lit.
Her stack was putting up a thin blue line into the dark, and the firebox door glowed orange at the seams.
Wick sat on his overturned bucket in front of her with a mug in both hands.
The dog was pressed against his shin.
He looked up when the door creaked.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't want to wake you."
"You scared me."
"I know. I should have left a note." He winced. "I should have woken you. I'm still learning."
I crossed the yard in my socks.
The snow went straight through them.
He saw and stood up and put me on the bucket, and took the other one, the one I always used.
"What are you doing out here?" I said.
