Chapter 22: The Ledger

"Where's the grate in this house?" I said.

Ruya pointed with her little silver knife.

Behind a silk hanging on her bedroom wall sat a square of rusted iron, low down.

"Can you pry it?"

"I've been prying at it since noon," Ruya said. "I broke two nails."

I took her knife and worked the blade in under the frame.

The rust went first. Then the iron came away in my hands.

Black air breathed out of the hole.

Ruya stepped back from it.

"It's so small."

"Then stay," I said. "Your father brought you a lamp."

She went gray under her kohl.

Then she tore the long green skirt off at the knee with both hands and threw it on the bed.

"Fine," she said.

Sahar stared at her. "That was silk."

"I have more."

I lit a candle stub off her lamp and put it between my teeth.

"I go first. Then you. Then Sahar. Sahar, if she stops, push her."

"With pleasure," said Sahar.

Ruya pinched out every lamp in the room but one clean candle by her bed.

"The guards look at my window," she said. "If it's lit, I'm sleeping."
