Chapter 14: The Dinner
"I'm told the Sitting needs the table's leave," Alden said from row F.
His voice carried up the box.
"Without it, a Stroud who touches a guest is only a man with a grudge."
Donovan said nothing.
His hand had closed around the rail, and I watched the knuckles go pale.
"I haven't come to quarrel," Alden went on.
"The uncle tells me your family hasn't decided what you are, Donovan."
"A husband, a fraud, a head of the docks. I'd call that an unsteady week."
"Say your piece, Alden," I said.
He smiled up at me.
"Dinner," he said. "Tomorrow at seven, at the house in Roland Park."
"My wife has been dying to meet the new Mrs. Stroud."
"No," said Donovan.
"Yes," I said.
Donovan turned his head and looked at me.
"I'd bring the wine," Alden said pleasantly, "but I suspect you'll want your own."
He rose, brushed a speck off his carnation, and walked up the aisle between his two men.
The back doors swung shut behind him with a sound.
