Chapter 17: The Vote
At seven in the morning the black table was lit by gray window light.
Twelve men sat on one side, with the two old women in pearls at the foot.
Donovan sat at the head with both hands in white gauze on the wood in front of him.
I sat in the second chair with my father's ledger under my palm.
The uncle did not wait to be called.
He rose on his cane, and the whole table watched him do it.
"I will be brief," he said.
"This family has been led for seven years by a man who bought a wife by fraud."
Nobody moved.
"The girl signed in ignorance. Any court would void it."
"With the marriage void, the grandfather's will passes the docks to the eldest head of the table."
"That's you," said the heavy man with the gold watch, mildly.
"It is. I take no pleasure in it."
"You look like you're about to enjoy it."
"Sit down," the uncle snapped.
The heavy man kept his hands folded and his eyes on the ceiling.
The uncle turned to me with a terrible gentleness.
"Child, you've been cheated. The kindest thing is to let a court undo it."
