Chapter 19: Signing Day
"Thursday," I said, and took the coffee after all.
It was terrible, and I drank it standing in front of him.
"Not at a lawyer's office. At the Meridian, in Box 4, in front of your donors."
Alden's eyebrows rose.
"My father signed his life away in a room with no windows," I said. "I want a room with three hundred witnesses."
"My dear girl." He glowed. "You do understand theatre."
"I understand that you like an audience."
"I do," said Alden. "Noon."
I walked out of the county building with my heart going.
Noreen was waiting in the car, and she looked at my face and said, "You said yes."
"I said yes."
"Good. Get in. I have to tape a microphone to your ribs."
On Thursday, at eleven-forty, the Meridian Theatre was a different place from the one I had run through on Halloween.
Every light was lit, and the chandeliers blazed, and three hundred donors in good wool filled the orchestra seats under a banner.
