Chapter 22: Earned
"Seven years," I said, "is a long time to owe a person."
"It's longer than that to repay," said Donovan. "I'll start now, if you'll stand here and let me."
Behind him, the two rows of men did not move.
"I'll do it in three parts," he said. "Your witnesses and mine."
He nodded to Noreen.
She brought up a thin gray man in a long coat.
He had been standing at the bottom of the steps with his hat in both hands.
I knew his shoes before I knew his face.
They were brown wingtips, polished, that I had last seen from my chair in a downtown office on June ninth.
"I am the lawyer who drew the document," he said, in a dry voice.
"On Calvert Street. Seven years ago."
"Say it louder," said the heavy man.
"I told Miss Ferrand it was a guarantee on a loan."
"I knew it was a marriage. I knew she did not understand it."
"I called her young lady and told her to sign where the arrow was."
I looked at him.
He didn't look at me.
"I've given my license to the bar this morning," he said. "I'm sorry."
"You smiled at me," I said.
