Chapter 22: The Pup

Tilda's water broke in my mother's kitchen at two in the morning, in the first thunderstorm of April.

She was standing at the stove with a pan of milk.

She looked down at the puddle on the linoleum, and then she looked at me.

She said a word I had never heard her say.

"It's early," she said.

"It's a week early," I said. "That's nothing. Sit."

"Lilia."

"Sit down, Tilda. I've got you."

I did not feel brave.

I heard my own heart in my ears and the rain on the new porch, and I felt a stone land on my chest.

But my hands were steady.

Hattie was on the stairs before I called her.

"I'll get the teacher," she said, and went out through the front door in her socks.

I got Tilda up the stairs and into the spare room.

Caleb was in the doorway by then with a pot of water in each hand.

He had run from the lodge in the rain.

"What do you need?"

"Towels. And keep my grandfather out of the room."

"He's already outside the door."

"Tell him to stop pacing. I can hear the floor."
