The new porch smelled of cedar and rain, and the post at the top of the steps was pale wood with no stain in it.
I sat on the top step in my mother's coat and waited for him.
Every window in the house was lit.
Ambrose had gone to the cabin on the inland lake, grumbling that he did not need to hear what was coming.
Hattie had taken Tilda and the baby back to the lodge.
She had said four things on her way out the door that I would never repeat.
Caleb came up the drive on foot.
He had washed the lake off, and he wore a clean black shirt, and he carried nothing, because I had told him to.
He stopped at the foot of the steps.
"Bring nothing," he said. "I did."
"You brought yourself."
"That's the only thing I own."
"It isn't," I said. "You own sixty wolves and a bad temper."
He climbed the steps.
He stopped one step below me, so that our eyes were level.
The lamp hit the pale scar through his eyebrow and made his eyes go gold.
"Say it again," he said.
"I said yes at the water."
"Say it where nobody's watching."
I stood up.
I put my hand on the pale new post, and I felt the grain under my palm.
