Chapter 16: Friday
On Friday at seven, the line stopped for the second time in my life.
This time I was standing on the platform when it happened.
Ansel had not spoken to me since Monday morning, except to say good morning in the corridor.
I had said it back, because the alternative was to scream.
He walked up the steps in the charcoal suit, with his keys in his right hand, and took the microphone off its stand.
Three hundred and forty people stood below him.
Some of them had cried in this yard on the first Monday.
Today nobody was crying.
They looked at him.
"Good morning," he said. "The line closes today."
A sound ran through the floor, low and animal.
"Rhodes Capital will cover two weeks of pay for every employee. Your lockers must be empty by noon."
"Two weeks," said a man near the dock.
"Two weeks."
"Some of us have been here forty years."
