At seven on Monday morning, Ansel stood on the platform by the loading dock without a microphone.

The line was running.

Three hundred and forty people were at their stations, and he asked Florence to stop it.

The conveyor wound down, and the whole floor went quiet.

I stood by the time clock, where he could see me.

He took off his jacket and laid it over the rail.

"Good morning," he said, and his voice carried without help. "I owe you something, and I'm going to say it plainly."

Nobody spoke.

"On the first Monday I told you to clear your lockers in ten minutes."

"Last Friday I did it again."

"The first time, I had a reason. The second time, I had nothing."

"I closed this line because I was hurt, and I let you pay for it."

He looked down at the woman with the gray braid.

"You asked me about your pension on the first day. I told you to ask the Carrows."

"That was true, and it was also cruel, and I knew it when I said it."

"I am sorry."

The floor was silent.

"That's all I have to say, and it doesn't fix anything," he said. "So here is what I'm going to do."
