Chapter 10: Rule Four

I told Rowan that night, because I wanted him to hear it from me before he heard it from anyone else.

He was in the kitchen with his sleeves rolled, making pasta, with a dish towel over one shoulder.

He looked up when I came in, and he smiled, and it was the easy smile I had only seen in this room.

"You're early," he said. "I'm not done."

"I need to say something."

He turned off the burner.

I stood on the other side of the island and put both hands flat on the marble.

"Rule four," I said.

He didn't move.

"I'm pregnant. I took the test today. I'm eleven days late and there are two lines, and I've never been late in my life."

Nothing changed in his face.

That was the part I noticed afterward.

The water kept going in the pot. A timer on the counter ticked down.

"There's one more thing, and it isn't good," I said. "Rule five. I promised you wouldn't lie, and I won't."

"Go on."

"Preston and I slept together ten days before the restaurant. I didn't know what he was going to do. It was a Tuesday, it was ordinary, and I'm telling you because I don't know whose it is."

His eyes closed.

"Ten days," he said quietly. "Before."

"Yes."

He opened them.

"That makes sense," he said.

"What does?"

"The timing." He pulled the dish towel off his shoulder and folded it in half, and then in half again. "You were with him for seven years. It's not a surprise."
