Chapter 13: The Brunch Announcement

Willa's POV

Mr. Aldous had booked the long room at his members' club for the founders' brunch, and forty people sat down to eggs under a chandelier.

Rowan sat on my left with his hand on the back of my chair.

He had not touched my skin since the night of the pasta, but his hand was always somewhere near me.

I noticed it every time.

"You don't have to eat the fish," he murmured.

"I'm not eating the fish."

"Good."

Across the table, the Wells Street tower sat in a leather folder in front of Mr. Aldous.

That was why Rowan had come.

The agreement was two years long, and walking out of this room would have told everyone in it who had won.

Preston and Lydia arrived late.

He wore a navy jacket, and she wore cream, with one hand spread low over her stomach.

Mr. Aldous half rose and said, "There you are," loudly, to show that nothing was wrong.

They took the two empty chairs at the head of the table, beside him.

Lydia looked at me and mouthed, Hi, sweetie.

I picked up my water glass.

Dessert had barely landed when Preston stood and tapped his fork on a glass.

"Dad," he said. "Everyone. I know this is a business morning. But the founders should hear this from me."

"Preston," said Mr. Aldous. "Sit down."

"Willa is pregnant."
