Chapter 22: Why He Said Yes

Rowan's POV

She said yes with a cracker in her hand.

I had practiced it for three weeks, in the shower and in the car.

None of it survived the sight of her on my kitchen counter in my shirt.

"Yes," she said. "You idiot. Yes."

The ring went on her finger, and it fit.

The old gold band stayed on her thumb beside it.

She held up her hand under the pendant light and turned it.

She looked at it for so long that I forgot to stand up.

I woke at six.

She was asleep on her side with her hand outside the blanket, and I lay still for a while to look at it.

Then I made coffee, because my mother had texted at five, which meant she was already in the car.

"I brought a binder," Margaret said at the door.

She had an actual binder. It had tabs.

"I proposed to her six hours ago."

"It's Sunday. Church halls book fast."

"We're not getting married in a church hall."

"Obviously not," she said, and sat down at the island with her glasses on her nose. "Where, then?"

I had known the answer since three in the morning.

"The roof of the restaurant on the river," I said. "The same room."

My mother's pen stopped.

"That room?"

"She can walk in on her own terms."

"Rowan." She took off her glasses. "May I ask you something I've never asked?"

"You've asked me everything."
