Chapter 6: The Hallway

Neither of us said a word in the elevator up forty floors.

He stood on one side of the car with his hands in his pockets, and I stood on the other with my heels in my fingers.

I had taken them off in the lobby. My feet hurt, and I wanted something to hold.

The doors opened on the penthouse hallway, long and dim, with one lamp left on at the far end.

Rowan went ahead of me and unlocked the door.

He didn't open it.

"You said something at the table," I said.

"I did."

"I have a reply."

He turned around.

In the lamplight his eyes were the color of wet slate, and he looked tired and careful.

"Then give it to me," he said.

"Why wait until tonight?"

I dropped my shoes on the floor.

I didn't plan the next part.

My hands were on his lapels.

Then my back was against the wall beside his door, and he had one palm flat next to my head.

"Willa," he said.

"Rule three was yours. I'm the one who's breaking it."

"That's not how rules work."

"Then tell me how they work."

He kissed me.

It was slow for about two seconds.

Then his other hand went to the back of my neck and his mouth opened mine, and the slow part was over.

I made a sound against his tongue I had never made for Preston.
