Chapter 15: Calder Street, Night
Winnie's van took the turn onto Calder Street on two wheels.
Six yellow cabs were already parked nose to tail across the far end of the block.
A seventh blocked the near end, and the driver leaned on its hood eating a sandwich.
"They owe me money," Winnie said, as if that explained it. "Mostly it's pie."
Behind the cabs stood the nurse in her scrubs and the old man with his crossword folded in his pocket.
A dozen more faces from the counter stood with them.
Nobody had a weapon but a tire iron or two.
Everybody had come anyway.
The ruin sat behind a chain fence at the end of the street, black against the streetlight.
The chimney stood alone, exactly as it had in the photograph.
My chest went tight, and I made myself walk toward it.
"Coal hatch is round the back," Emeric said.
"I know where it is. You carried me out of it."
He looked at me.
"I remember everything but the hatch," I said. "Show me."
