Chapter 23: The Seat

The Blood Moon rose over the old Exchange the color of a bruised peach.

I stood in the vaulted hall in my yellow slicker, because I still had no better idea of who I was without it.

Under it, I wore a dress.

Winnie had bought it.

She had stood at my elbow in the fitting room saying, "Tell the saleslady what you want, honey," until I did.

It was grey-blue like my eyes, and plain, and it fit.

Two hundred vampires lined the walls in evening clothes.

Three elders stood at the long dais, and the woman in green silk was in the middle of them.

Winnie sat in the front row in her best church dress with her handbag in her lap.

The old man with the crossword sat beside her, in a tie.

The Archivist read from the new Compact in a voice that did not rise.

She read Article One, and a line was ruled through it.

She read Article Three twice.

Then she turned the page and read the new fourth article, which a napkin had become.

"No sentence shall fall on any of our blood for who they love."

I heard something release in the room.

"Calder Street is in the keeping of the Archivist," she read, "and shall have a bench."
