Chapter 15: Cameras

I pulled the quilt over us both and stared at the red light.

"Stay here," Mathias said, and tried to stand.

His burned chest cracked open at the effort, and he went gray.

"You're not going anywhere," I said. "Lie down."

"Bryn, he's filming us."

"I know what he's doing."

I put on my jeans and my sweater, and I wound the silver chain once more around my wrist.

Then I opened the window and climbed out onto the frozen grass in my socks.

Preston was backing away through the pines.

He held his phone high in front of him and kept the screen on my face.

"There she is!" he shouted. "Bryn Halvorsen, everybody. Hello, hello."

"This is the Fox Chapel cult I told you about."

"They chain people to posts in there!"

He had a ring light clipped to the phone, and it made his face look green.

Behind him, in the drive, a white sedan sat with its engine running, and Whitney was in the passenger seat with her arms crossed.

"Preston," I said. "Turn it off."

"No! You think you can make a fool of me in a ballroom?"

"My father fired me this morning, did you know that? He said I cost him thirty years."
