Chapter 23: Dawn Shift
The hill behind the lodge was gray and wet at five in the morning.
Frost lay on the black stone where I had been bitten, and our breath showed in the cold.
Mathias took off his coat and handed it to me.
"I'll be a minute," he said.
"Don't stare. It isn't pretty from the outside."
"You were beautiful in the lodge," I said. "I'll be fine."
He took off his shirt, and his boots, and his jeans, and stood naked in the dawn on the frozen grass with his hands open.
He looked up at the sky going pale between the pines.
Then he let it come.
I had watched Alden's daughter shift, and Alden, and I had seen Mathias wrestle in the ring in a blur.
This was different.
It was slow, and it did not hurt him.
His back rolled, and dark fur flowed up it, and his shoulders widened and dropped.
He sank to his hands and then to four paws, and the man became a wolf.
When it was done, a huge black wolf stood on the hill with grey eyes.
