Chapter 11: The Empty Chair
We reached Blackmere at noon.
The whole pack stood in the yard in the cold with their coats buttoned and their faces turned toward the hall.
Conrad had changed into a clean shirt from the car.
He walked a step ahead of me and a step to the side, so that nobody could mistake whose side I was on.
His wound was closing.
By night there would be only a pink seam.
I kept the tin box under my arm and my mother's key around my neck on the blue thread.
Everyone in the yard could smell what we had done, and several of the older women looked at the ceiling.
A man near the door coughed into his fist.
I lifted my chin.
I was not sorry.
The doors of the great hall stood open.
Daphne sat on the dais, in the tall carved chair at the right hand of the Alpha's seat.
She had changed her dress.
It was cream now, plain and modest, with her fair hair loose, and the signed contract lay open across her lap.
Twenty elders sat at the long table below her.
A ring of Blackmere wolves stood along the walls, and none of them looked comfortable.
"Alpha," Daphne said, rising. She smiled with a perfect sorrowful sweetness. "Thank the Moon you're back. I was so worried."
"Why are you in that chair?" said Conrad.
"Because it's mine."
She held up the contract.
"Greywater ink binds a Hartwell daughter to the Alpha on the other line the moment both names are dry. You know it. Your elders know it. I'm your mate by law, whatever you feel."
