Chapter 17: The Real Ledger
Linnea's POV
I went to the guest wing alone.
Conrad did not like it, and he said so, and then he sat on the stairs outside with his arms crossed and let me go.
The healer opened the door and left us.
Daphne sat on the edge of the bed with her burned hand wrapped to the wrist in white linen.
She had no powder on her face, and no ribbon in her hair.
Her eyes were swollen.
She looked at me and did not smile.
"You came," she said.
"You said only me."
"I didn't think you would."
"Neither did I."
I stayed standing by the door.
She reached under the pillow with her good hand and drew out a thick book bound in black leather with a brass clasp.
She held it out.
I did not take it.
"What is it?"
"The real accounts of Greywater. The ones he keeps in the study safe." She swallowed. "I opened it the night before I came here. I wanted something to hold over him if you took the Alpha and I lost. I never meant to read it."
"But you did."
"Yes."
"Why are you giving it to me?"
Her face crumpled, and she wiped it hard with her wrist.
"Open the last page," she said.
I took the book.
I turned past columns of numbers, a dozen years of them, in my father's heavy, slanting hand.
Money taken from the pack fund at every quarter day.
Money paid out to three men, each with a letter beside his name.
I knew the letters.
They were the initials of three Alphas of the Gathering.
On the last page there were only four lines.
The first was a date, nine days before my father had put the contract on my desk.
The second was the initial R.M.
The third said: Daphne. Bride price, the south ford and the vote.
The fourth said: Paid in full on delivery.
