Chapter 19: The Offer
The scroll said that the Elder of the White Peak would call on the cook of Kurosumi at noon.
It hoped this was not an inconvenience.
Kagiro read it twice and set it down.
"He will not come into my kitchen," he said.
"He will," said Riko. "He's polite."
He came at noon exactly, with two retainers in grey silk, walking through the courtyard as if he owned the stones.
The kitchen was full.
Teruko was at the pass with her pan, and the village women were peeling roots along the long table.
Daigo stood by the range with his tail tucked up so hard that his robe bulged.
Hakuzan stopped in the doorway and smiled at every one of them.
"What a lively house," he said. "How I envy it."
"Say what you came to say," Teruko said, "and take your boots off my floor."
"It is Lord Kagiro's floor, dear lady. But I will be brief."
He turned to Riko, who was standing at the range with a ladle in her hand, and bowed to her.
