Chapter 14: Lipstick
Dixon reached the desk before anyone could stop him.
"Where's my wife?"
He smelled like bourbon and a heavy, sweet perfume that was nothing like Brynn's.
"Sir, she just delivered," the nurse said. "You can see your daughter first."
"My daughter."
He said it like he was trying the word on.
She took him down a corridor to a long glass window on the second floor.
Behind it, in rows of clear boxes, lay babies the size of loaves of bread.
Myra and I followed at a distance, and a guard I hadn't noticed followed us.
At six, a nurse wheeled Brynn up in a chair with a hospital blanket over her knees.
She was gray, with her hair stuck to her forehead.
She had been in labor for five hours, and she held herself up with both hands on the armrests.
She saw Dixon, and her whole body went still.
He turned from the glass.
"That's her?" he said, tilting his head at the nearest box.
