Chapter 17: The Fall
At nine on Monday morning the yard looked like a sale had been called off.
Three trucks with empty boat trailers stood nose to tail on the gravel.
Fourteen yard workers sat on the long bench outside the shed with coffee, because Myra had told them to come and watch.
I stood beside her on the apron with my arms folded.
Dixon came out of the marina office in a pressed shirt and a tie that didn't match it.
He had not slept, and his smile came on a second late.
"Morning, everybody," he said. "Something I can help with?"
A woman climbed down from the first truck.
She had a clipboard, and she did not smile back.
"I bought my father's old cruiser through you in June," she said. "You told me the hull was sound."
"It is sound, ma'am."
"My surveyor put a screwdriver through the stringer on Friday," she said. "I'm taking my boat and my deposit, Dixon."
"The contract says all sales are final."
"Then sue me. I'd like to see you say that to a judge."
