Chapter 13: The Cells

The guards split us at the top of the cellar stairs.

"Not him," Garrick had ordered, as they hauled me out of the hall. "He goes to the north bedroom, and two men stand on the door."

Cade fought them for three steps and then stopped, because I shook my head.

The last I saw of him was his face over a guard's shoulder, white and furious.

They took me down eleven stone steps I had carried trays down a hundred times.

Never to anyone inside.

The iron door shut behind me, and the lock turned.

My mother stood up from the cot.

She had been in that cell for a day and a night.

Her apron was gone, her hair had come loose, and there was a bruise on her jaw I had not seen at graduation.

"Orla." Her voice cracked. "Your eyes."

"Who is Everett?"

She sat back down slowly.

"Everett Harrow was your father," she said. "He was the alpha of Blackpine, and I was his Luna."

I stood against the door and did not move.

"You told me he was a rogue who walked out on us."

"I told you a lie, and I told it so long I almost believed it."

"Tell me the rest."

She looked at her hands.

"Garrick was his beta. He ate at our table. He stood godfather at your naming, a month after you were born."

My stomach turned over.

"Three weeks later he called Everett out alone on the north ridge, at night, with no pack to see it."
