Chapter 15: His Father's Son

Cade's POV

Six men came through the kitchen door behind my father, and every one of them had his hand on a weapon.

I stood in the middle of the floor with my arms loose and the back door at my back.

Behind me I heard Orla's feet stop.

"Go," I said without turning. "Take Rose."

"Cade."

"It's an order. The first one I've ever given you, and you can punish me for it later."

I heard her breathe in once, hard, and then the back door opened.

It shut again, and I let my shoulders drop.

My father walked up to me until we were close enough to touch.

He was a heavy man, and he had never needed to raise his voice to fill a room.

"Where's the key?" he said.

"I don't have it."

"Don't lie to me. Who opened the door?"

"I did."

He looked past me at the empty kitchen.

"She is Everett Harrow's daughter," he said quietly. "You know that."

"I know what she is."

"Then you know what she'll cost this pack."

"Everett Harrow was alpha before you." My voice came out steady, and it surprised me. "Rose told her everything in the cells. I want you to tell me."

"Tell you what?"

"That he was your friend. That you were his beta. That he's dead, and you're sitting in his chair."

The kitchen had gone very quiet.

I watched his eyes go flat and cold, and I realized I was not frightened.

"I put him down on the north ridge," my father said.

He said it plainly, in the voice he used for ordering supper.

"I put a silver knife in his back while he was looking at the moon. I'd do it again."
