Chapter 18: The Great Hall
We reached the pack house an hour before sunrise.
Hester led us in through the kitchen yard, past the bins and the woodpile, and the back door opened for her before she knocked.
Inside, the whole kitchen staff stood in the dark with their aprons on.
My mother was among them, and she handed me a clean dress without a word.
"Garrick has thirty-one children in the great hall," Hester said quietly. "Every child under twelve from the kitchen, the laundry and the cabins. Four guards on the doors, two at the dais."
"Why?" Cade asked.
"He wants Orla to walk in and kneel for them."
"Then she'll walk in," my mother said.
I looked at her.
"Not alone." Her voice was dry. "The cooks have carried the pack's supper into that hall for thirty years, and no guard has ever looked at a tray."
I understood.
"The buttery passage," I said.
"It runs under the dais. A child can crawl it, and a grown woman can carry one."
"Two trays to a cook," Hester said. "One for the guards to see. One for the little ones."
I looked at Cade.
He stood against the wall, grey in the face, and he had tied a clean shirt over his stripes.
"You'll stay with me," I said.
"Always."
"You say nothing unless I ask."
"Yes, alpha."
My mother's eyebrow went up, and she said nothing either.
At sunrise I walked in through the front doors.
The great hall was packed.
The whole pack stood along the walls, two hundred wolves who had been summoned to watch.
