Chapter 6: The Photo
The photo hit every phone in school before first bell.
I knew because forty phones buzzed in the hall at once, and then forty heads turned toward me.
Melody stood on the cafeteria steps with her screen held high.
"Everybody look!" she called. "Look what the omega's been up to at night."
The picture showed my yard in moonlight.
Cade stood in it with his shirt in his hand. Behind him was my bedroom window, and in the window was me.
Someone whistled. Someone else said, "No way."
"Two in the morning," Melody said. "At her cabin. Our future alpha, with the cook's girl." She turned to me with her eyes shining. "What did you do, Orla? Did you drug him?"
My stomach went cold.
My wolf was already awake and very calm.
"Don't shake," she said. "Look at the photo again."
I looked at the photo again.
The camera had caught his bare back. Seven stripes ran across it, dark in the moonlight, from his shoulder to his belt.
I climbed the steps until I was standing level with Melody.
"Go on," I said. "Send it to Alpha Garrick."
Her smile slipped. "What?"
"The picture. Send it to the whole pack, and to him." I kept my voice low, and it carried anyway. "He'll want to know why his son was in a yard at two in the morning."
"I'll tell him exactly why."
"And then he'll look at the picture." I took her phone out of her hand, gently, and I held it up so the people on the steps could see. "He'll see his son's back."
