Chapter 7: The Wetsuit

Aarón took the job.

He told me the next morning, with a coffee in each hand and the face of someone who hadn’t slept.

"If I say no, they’ll get suspicious. If I say yes, I can control where they look."

"You’re right."

"I don’t like it."

"I know."

"He’s coming here."

My mouth went dry.

"Here?"

"He wants to see the place. Talk to me. He said seven o’clock."

I looked around.

The house had a combined living room and kitchen, a tiny bathroom, and a wooden loft you reached by climbing a ladder.

I’d been sleeping up there for a week, on a mattress on the floor, with a burlap curtain for a door.

"I’ll hide upstairs," I said.

"Without making a sound."

"Don’t even cough."

"I won’t even cough, Aarón."

At exactly seven, a gray pickup truck pulled up in front of the pier.

I was already in the loft, lying on the mattress.
