Chapter 12: The Pump House
I dried my hands, put on my boots, and walked down the lane.
I told myself I only meant to close the door.
The pump house was a cinderblock box with a tin roof and one green-shaded window.
It sat at the head of the lane where the gravel met the county road.
The door swung in on its hinges when I touched it.
Inside it smelled of cold coffee and paper.
An old well pump sat under a tarp in one corner.
Along the opposite wall stood a steel desk with a lamp, a laptop and a printer.
A coffee cup with a dried ring in the bottom sat beside the laptop.
A corkboard over the desk was covered in index cards in tidy rows.
In the middle of the board, pinned by one corner, was a photograph of an old woman in a straw hat.
She stood in a pecan row, laughing at whoever held the camera.
"Ida," I said out loud.
