Chapter 17: Eleven Nights

The night before the Gathering, I sat on the edge of the bed with a candle and said, "Count them."

Cade lay against the pillows with his hands outside the quilt.

The grey had reached his jaw on the left side.

He had not stood in three days, and Rhys carried him to the porch for air.

"Count what?"

"Every night you sat with her. I want the number, and I want what happened."

He looked at the candle.

"Eleven," he said.

I had expected a lie, or a flinch.

He gave me the number at once.

"The first was in April. She sat in the suite and cried because her wolf had gone quiet. I stayed an hour."

"Why?"

"Because Godfrey said she'd lost everything in Seattle, and I thought I owed her kindness."

"Go on."

"The second and third, she asked about you. If you were eating well. If the honey was helping with the nausea."

My hands went still on my knees.

"She asked every time?"

"Every time." He turned his head. "I told her you loved it. I told her you ate it on toast."

I thought of the grey crust on the lid.

I thought of the toast.

I made myself keep going.

"And the others?"

"Four of them, Godfrey sent me. He came to my office at dusk and said, 'She's having a bad night. Be with her.' I didn't question it."

"And the seven-month scan?"

"The ninth night." He did not look away. "I sat on a chair by her bed and I watched the clock, and at eight I stood up to go to you. Godfrey was in the door. He said, 'Stay, she's frightened.'"
