Chapter 19: Hayloft
Mud season came to Tewksbury Corners in the first week of April, and the hayloft in Ansel's barn smelled of old hay and wet wood and the rain on the roof.
Ansel had hauled me up the ladder one-armed, with my boots in his teeth, and Emile had followed with a lantern and a paper bag.
Now the three of us stood on a nest of horse blankets laid over bales, and the lantern threw our shadows up the rafters, huge and swaying.
"I want both of you," I said.
I had been working up to saying it for two weeks.
"At once.
"I want to know what it is."
Ansel looked at Emile.
Emile did not look at me.
He took off his glasses, folded them and laid them on a bale, and then he looked at me with his bare dark eyes.
"I can't do this in a hurry," he said.
"I know."
"It takes a long time to do right.
"An hour, if you let me."
"I'll let you.
"I'll tell you how."
He smiled, slow and exact.
"Then take your clothes off, Control," he said.
I did.
I stood naked in the lantern light with the rain drumming on the shingles, and the cold air of the loft came up through the boards and raised the skin on my arms.
Ansel took off his own shirt, and I put my hands on his chest, which was broad and sandy-haired and warm.
"Lie down," I said.
He lay back on the blankets, long and flushed, with his hands behind his head.
"Emile first," I said.
"Make me ready."
Emile knelt behind me on the blankets.
He drew my braid aside and kissed the back of my neck.
His mouth went down my spine, one vertebra at a time, as slowly as he had on the cot, and every kiss opened something new.
"Lie on him," he said.
"Face up.
"Back to his chest."
I lay down on Ansel, and the length of him was warm and hard under my shoulder blades.
